OrgChartX is an automated layout tool for tree-structured organizational charts — not a general-purpose drawing application. This design focus is intentional, and it is precisely what makes OrgChartX fast, easy, and powerful.

The Problem We Set Out to Solve​

In years of managing projects and teams, we constantly needed to present team structures — for internal coordination, client communication, department overviews, or business-specific breakdowns. The demand for org charts was enormous.

What made it worse: the same team members often needed to be presented differently depending on the audience. A project review, a client pitch, and a department briefing each called for a different view of the same organization. That meant redrawing the chart over and over — a tedious, repetitive cycle of "drawing work" that added no real value.

We built OrgChartX not to create yet another drawing tool, but to provide a focused solution to this problem — at least for the tree-structured charts that make up the majority of real-world org charts.

Why Tree Structure Only​

The Math Behind Automated Layout​

In a tree structure, every node has exactly one parent (except the root). With just a few inputs — node sizes and parent-child layout directions — the application can mathematically compute a unique, optimal position for every node. This is what enables fully automated layout.

For non-tree structures such as matrix organizations, nodes may report to multiple managers, creating cross-connections that break the strict hierarchy. In such cases, there is no mathematically unique layout — the application cannot determine where to place each node without human judgment. That becomes a manual drawing problem, which is an entirely different kind of tool.

This mathematical boundary is why OrgChartX focuses exclusively on tree structures — it is the scope within which automation can truly deliver.
